Giants - Emphasis on working in our community
1. Coaching in Schools Development Programme
We have a very active coaching in schools development programme running within the schools. This programme uses Nelson Giants players to provide schools with the basketball coaching on a weekly basis, putting back into the community and acting as role models for the young of the Nelson/Tasman and Marlborough regions. This has resulted in an increase in the number of young players and in the popularity of basketball at a regional level. As a comprehensive, quality and free coaching program it helps to ensure that every child and teenager in the region has an equal opportunity to receive regular quality basketball
coaching.
‘The support we have had from Basketball and the Nelson Giants, for a number of years, has been outstanding. Your involvement in our school is having an obvious impact on our children’s’ enthusiasm for
basketball’ Ranzau School
2. Provide an opportunity for Nelson players
The Nelson Giants has always prided itself on the opportunities it provides for local players to show their talents on the national stage. Our aim is continue to do this.
3. Richmond Mall Noise Crew
Another positive community initiative that has been set up between The Giants and local schools is the 'Richmond Mall Noise Crew’. Each week a different school is chosen to receive 30 child and 5 adult courtside tickets to the game. This gives the children an opportunity to see their role models in action.
4. Toyworld Nelson Giant Effort Awards
Throughout the local schools we have placed an award called the ‘Toyworld Nelson Giant Effort Award’. A Nelson Giant attends the school assembly and hands out this award to the pupil whom the school feels has shown a Giant Effort. For the past 6 years the Giants have been running this successful award programme through 26 Schools in the Nelson/Tasman district. The aim of the awards is to inspire young kids to be the best they can be.
5. Community Relationships
Every year the players attend a variety of events including school galas, coaching clinics and holiday programmes, for motivational speaking, coaching and the handing out of prizes.
Each week during the season the Nelson Giants players visit 26 schools in the region to coach and present awards.
